Retract-a-Band is a one-of-a-kind, latex, exercise resistance band device with comfortable grips for both hands! Each handle can automatically retract the band to make it shorter or extend the band to make it longer. THE JOURNEY OF RETRACT-A-BAND
Hello, I am the Doctor of Physical Therapy who invented Retract-a-Band
Retract-a-Band is a "Game Changer" and a NEW WAVE in latex resistance band exercise workouts!
This journey began almost 15 years ago with a thought during a physical therapy treatment with one of my patients. They were having a hard time holding onto the elastic resistance band for the exercise that I prescribed and I brought over one that hand handles on each end. The problem was that each exercise required a different length and/or resistance and we only had so many bands with handles at so many sizes. The question in my head formulated . . . Is there an elastic resistance band or tube that could adjust to always have a handle for BOTH hands and adjust resistance levels?
Later that day or week or whenever, I performed a light search and did not find anything, and this process occurred over and over again for 10 years or so. Finally, about 4-5 years ago, I decided to get more serious about the search and found a few products that were close, but never exactly what I was looking for and needed. We were in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic, I had a bit more time, a book about the process of patenting a new product was purchased, and THE REAL JOURNEY BEGAN!
At first, there was a tremendous amount of reading and reviewing patents all related to my idea and some construction of rudimentary models along with purchasing of products that had components of my idea. There were dog leashes and tape measure and lunch box containers and even airport security posts! This led to more research and a home 3-D printer purchase requiring a whole education about how to use this amazing tool. More advanced prototypes began forming in the 3-D printer, a designer was located (Vi has been amazing), computer software purchased and learned, and then the patent application mountain had to be climbed! Remember, I have a full-time job and a physical therapy practice that is my primary focus.
In the meantime, an ever-growing team of people have helped; my supportive, understanding, and intelligent family, early 3-D printer companies, dear friends and their savvy children ("nieces & nephews"), patients and their families, colleagues, interns, and strangers referred by all of the above who have expertise needed to move forward in this journey. All of which who VOLUNTERED their time and advice given the financial restrictions of my physical therapist's income.
This brings us quickly to present day. We currently have an industrial 3-D printer for some manufacturing and ongoing testing, partners in various parts of the world for components, Vi still providing design adjustments (did I mention she is amazing), a small space for assembly and distribution, an intern to teach us Social Media marketing, and lots of never-ending learning! Oh, let's not forget, we have "Patent Pending" status here in the U.S. and Internationally! Keep your fingers crossed for us.
